There will never be another iPhone
Yes, I know a super click bat title, but it got you here. Let me share with you what got me to this answer. It was all the work I did for huge companies like Ford, LEGO, and Honda. See, they came to me wanting to make the next great invention like the iPhone. Everyone wants to produce the next iPhone, but no one knows how.
But what if I told you, you can't make the next new iPhone, will at least not yet. That you need to focus on something else because technology isn't there yet. 3 things allowed us to make the first iPhone. This was technology advances in screens, computers, and philosophical advances in creativity. The last one being the most important.
Why because you can replace iPhone with iPod, iCamra, iGPS. Let's face it if mass consumers carried around Wlky-Takeys it would be the iWlky-Takeys. The "phone" at this time was just the delivery method. The real innovation came from taking tv screens and mashing them together with computers in an intuitive way called "gestures." Because before the iPhone, phones were jokes with bright lights, giant speakers, and horrible touchscreens with bad UX. Matter of fact, at this time, phones completed with Wlky-TakeysIt in some places. Do you know how insane that is!!! That is a car completing with a hose, and at one point in time, they did compete.
See, its the same as cars. Right now, we think there will be another big advancement, but no right now, it's about improving. Eventually, we might get to self-driving. But right now, it's about honing the smartphone and developing it. The next iPhone will not be a smartphone or a car with self-driving. Because they have already been dun.
Part of what made the iPhone such an aha moment was the gestures. Something that had never been conceived of. Something that had never been done before. The next battleground, the next new iPhone, is going to be a strange combination of things never see before. Called something completely different then what we would imagen. With the only carryover being "philosophical advances in creativity."
But you're here because you want to make the next new iPhone. So take 2 similar things and combine them with a new way of thinking. Yes, I know its a super simple answer. But trust me, philosophical advances in creativity are the hardest thing to make. That's why everyone cheered JOBS on when he talked about "pitch" to zoom; they were not cheering for a phone but rather a new interface that was more human.
